“Why Dubai?” by A. Watford

What is the big deal about Dubai? It’s becoming more and more popular to visit. It’s frequently mentioned in television shows and movies, but is it really all it’s cracked up to be? Well, my answer is Yes! And here’s why.

Dubai has been called the world’s playground because of its opulence, luxury, beauty, and excitement. If you enjoy warm weather, beaches, and a titillating nightlife, then book your trip to Dubai ASAP (or at least as soon as the pandemic is over). Additionally, it is one of the safest cities in the world. Here are my recommendations if you’re looking to make the most out of your trip to Dubai.

1. Visit the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world at 2,722 feet. The observation deck offers a breathtaking view of the beautiful city and all of its glory right under your nose! I felt like the Queen of the World while “At the Top” of the Burj Khalifa.

2. Visit the Mall in Dubai, the largest mall in the world. Get used to Dubai having the tallest, the largest, the biggest or the best of everything. The Dubai Mall boasts over 1200 shops and luxury stores. I’ve never seen so many designer stores in all of my life. (Gucci, Prada, Fendi, all in one place, oh my!) I felt as if I walked for miles, and still didn’t see the entire mall. It also includes a state-of-the-art aquarium in the mall where you can view wall sized aquarium tanks while walking from one shop to another. You can also catch a show at the Dubai Fountain where water is projected 500 stories in the air. That’s just the way they do it in Dubai.

3. Visit the Dubai Spice Souk via the abra ride (water taxi). I wasn’t interested in spices but it’s a great place to purchase clothes, souvenirs, etc. I was able to get a great deal on a gorgeous piece of jewelry. This actually was one of the highlights of my trip. Here, I felt truly immersed in the culture of Dubai. It was like the Old Town or “hood” of Dubai, and a perfect place for people watching.

4. Take an Arabian Nights excursion. This trip is where you will truly experience what most people think of when they hear Dubai. During this full day tour, we enjoyed riding in SUVs speedily navigating all of the twists, turns, and curves of large sand dunes in the desert. I felt like I was on a very comfortable and air-conditioned (Thank God!) roller coaster. Later we enjoyed camel rides, hookah & henna bars, and a buffet while being entertained by a tanoura artist and belly dancers.

5. Visit the historical neighborhood of Al Fahidi in Bur Dubai. We visited the Coffee Museum here and the Dubai Museum. Also, we noticed the Dubai Frame, a structure that looks like a giant picture frame and stands 500 ft. tall. It separates the old city from the new. This area was insightful as we learned information about the culture and a history lesson in the evolution of Dubai.

These are just a few things we discovered in Dubai, but there is so much more to experience like zip lining at the Dubai Marina, splashing and swimming at the world’s largest water park, Kite Beach, and the Burj Al Arab, the hotel shaped like a sail that sits on the water. Also, there are even newer attractions now that were specifically built for the 2020 World Expo. So if you haven’t visited Dubai before, please go. I guarantee you won’t regret it!
